How the Present Value Formula Works
The present value formula discounts a future amount back to today by dividing by the growth factor (1 + r)ⁿ. This tells you how much money you would need to invest right now, at a given rate, to end up with that future amount.
The higher the discount rate, the lower the present value — because your money could grow faster, meaning you need less today. Similarly, the longer the time period, the lower the present value. This is the core idea behind the time value of money: a shilling today is worth more than a shilling tomorrow.
