How the Financial Freedom Formula Works
The freedom figure is the amount of invested capital where your returns alone cover your expenses. Once you hit it, you never need to withdraw from the principal — your money compounds forever. This is also known as the 4% rule in reverse: if you spend 4% of a portfolio per year, the portfolio must be 25× your annual expenses to last indefinitely (assuming a 4% real return).
Every month, your portfolio grows by two forces: your savings (income − expenses), and your investment returns on everything you’ve already put in. The calculator simulates this month-by-month until the portfolio reaches your freedom figure. Combine with the Compound Interest Calculator to see how contributions accelerate your timeline, or the Rule of 72 to see how fast your money doubles.
