How the Bond Income Formula Works
Coupon income depends only on face value × coupon rate — the market price of the bond does not change the coupon paid. The market price only affects your yield: if you bought the bond below par, your current yield is higher than the coupon rate; if above par, it\u2019s lower.
Yield to Maturity (YTM) is the total annualised return if you hold the bond until maturity, accounting for both coupon payments and any price discount/premium. The approximate formula is [(Annual Coupon + (Face − Price)/Years) / ((Face + Price)/2)] × 100. For the exact YTM, use a spreadsheet\u2019s XIRR function.
